If you have any little people in your life it is not uncommon for them to pick up swear words, whether it’s the schoolyard or because of your road rage as a parent.

Kids can often blurt out a curse or two - but what if some of the words they have picked up are very offensive?

Psychotherapist and author Iseult White told The Pat Kenny Show that it can be difficult to keep children from picking up bad words.

"I think you can't just take internet culture, I think you have to also take general popular culture - what kids are exposed to on television shows, in songs, in videos - they're exposed to all of these things from a very early age," she said.

"I think it's very difficult to prevent them from seeing some of these things because even in the popular culture... some music videos are highly sexualised.

"Then they're hearing the words of the songs and how are they do discriminate for themselves what they can use and where?"

Ms White also said that children often pick up this language from their parents - which can be an uncomfortable insight to come to terms with.
