Every county council in Ireland offers a way for Christmas trees to be recycled, with people in Dublin 'spoilt for choice'.
Kavanagh Christmas Trees Owner Christy Kavanagh has said there are several options for people looking to recycle, dispose of or repurpose this year's tree.
He told Late Breakfast with Stephanie Preissner this morning that councils have different centres set up all over the country.
"We're blessed in this country to have so many recycling centres and recycling sites," he said.
"Councils nationwide have, as they do every year, set up all the different centres.
"In Dublin you're spoilt for choice".
Mr Kavanagh said if people search for 'recycling Christmas trees' online, they will find a myriad of options.
"From Croke Park, Marlay Park, Blackrock Park, Cabinteely Park - there's hundreds of them," he said.
Mr Kavanagh said people can also have their Christmas tree collected.
"There are people that collect them, some for charities, we collect Christmas trees for a fee," he said.
"Some people today that have a beautiful, modern electric car they may not want to put a needle-dropping Christmas tree in it."
Mr Kavanagh said there is an option in every county to recycle a Christmas tree.
"A real tree can be shredded and put into the parks to act as a mulch to stop the weeds growing in the park," he said.
"So, it's a win-win for the council and it's a beautiful product.
"A real tree is wonderful because during the year the real tree in the farms has given out oxygen and taken in CO2.
"The root system of the Christmas tree is left in the soil, and it stores the carbon in the soil.
"So it's a beautiful product."
On a suggestion of using the Christmas tree as firewood, Mr Kavanagh said this could be another option.
"I wouldn't be against that... there's thousands and thousands of houses that have still open fires," he said.
"You could burn the tree, let it dry a little bit [first].
"We have in our home here a big stove so we burn the waste Christmas tree product to heat our home."
Mr Kavanagh said another recycling option that he takes is to bring the tree to a local school.
"We bring the tree to the school and we put it in the soil, and we plant runner beans around it or sweetpea," he said.
"We use it as a trellis to have a beautiful cone... one side of the tree can be sweetpea and the other side could be runner beans that you can harvest in the autumn time," he added.
People should check with their local authority for details. More information on Christmas tree disposal in Dublin can be found here
