Newstalk reporter Henry McKean is on a fitness mission, and having mastered the technique for pulling off the perfect plank, he's now trying a sit up on a stability ball.

The stability ball has its background in physical therapy and as an aid to rehabilitation.  It is used to develop muscular strength, endurance and flexibility and it also promotes balance and co-ordination.

Kieran Keenan, personal trainer and owner of Fitsquad.ie, showed Henry exactly how it's done.

Technique:

  • Sitting on the stability ball with your arms across chest, walk your feet out until the ball is under the lower and middle back.
  • Drop your chin slightly down, slide your ribcage down towards your hips, exhale on the way down and inhale on the way back up.
  • Slide your ribcage down towards your hips and exhale bringing your hip joint to in or around 90 degrees, slowly release bringing your lower and middle back onto the ball.
