What’s the current going rate for trick or treaters?
As hundreds and thousands of children all across Ireland dress up in their spookiest costumes and head out trick or treating, adults will be asking themselves, ‘How much should we give them?’
Lunchtime Live presenter Andrea Gilligan ran an unscientific poll on Instagram and found a majority, 53% believe two two items is okay, 18% say three things and the remainder suggested Halloween party bags.
It is this final option that Newstalk’s Tech Correspondent Jess Kelly has opted for.
“The amount of people saying, ‘Whatever you have, buy double’,” she said.
“They were saying to me you need to do at least three items per child - then there was the suggestion of bags.
“So, I went out and I broke out the sharpies; I sat on the floor, I watched a bit of Hocus Pocus.
“I drew little witches, I drew little cats on every single bag.”
Each bag contains a little packet of Haribo, a lollipop and either another lollipop or a little chocolatey thing as well.
“So, there’s at least three things in each bag,” she said.
LNH Edit owner Adrian Barry said for many years his house has successfully operated what is “basically an honesty box” for trick or treaters.
“Get all your stuff, dump them all into the box at the front door,” he suggested.
“Typically, we’re not going to be at home for a couple of hours anyway when you’re out picking up your own sweets.
“If a kid comes over, there’s a box of sweets there and they’ll take two or three of them.
“If they end up taking five of them - best of luck to them.”
