A former Waterford Crystal worker is celebrating after a specially-commissioned bowl he made was filled with shamrock and presented to US President Barack Obama at the White House yesterday.

Sean Egan is a master engraver who lost his job when Waterford Crystal closed in 2009. He then set up his own company with the support of the city Enterprise Board.

The bowl itself was made by Heritage Crystal in Waterford. Sean Egan told the Ray D'arcy Show this morning that he based his engraving around the theme of 'The Gathering'.

US President Obama yesterday praised the success of the Irish in America saying it serves as a reminder that the United States needs to build an immigration system "that works for families, businesses and the economy".

He made the remarks at the lavish White House reception to mark St. Patrick’s Day where guests were treated to an Irish-themed menu.

Among the 400 VIP guests were Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his wife Fionnuala, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, the North’s First and Deputy First Minister Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness.
