Any assumption that Conor McGregor would be elected Mayor of Dublin is “wildly wrong”, a Professor of Politics has said.

Last year, Limerick elected John Moran as the country’s first directly elected mayor in the local elections.

However, the Sunday Times has reported that plans for a directly elected Mayor of Dublin could be shelved amid fears that Conor McGregor could be elected to the powerful position.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Eoin O’Malley, Associate Professor of Politics at DCU, said if McGregor decides to run for Mayor of Dublin, “that’s democracy”.

“I think the Government is possibly underestimating the public because if they think that somebody like Conor McGregor would have a chance of winning, I think they’re wildly wrong,” he said.

“We can see in Limerick, there is a tendency not to vote for party candidates and vote for independents.

“And so John Moran won in Limerick but he’s a very sane human being.”

McGregor, who last year was found guilty of assaulting a woman, Nikita Hand, in a civil trial, has often spoken about his political ambitions.

On a visit to the White House for St Patrick’s Day, he claimed that Ireland is “at the cusp of potentially losing its Irishness”

In response, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said his remarks did not “reflect the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, or the views of the people of Ireland.”
