The National Lottery is urging people in Dublin to check their tickets after last night's EuroMillions draw.

Someone in the city is €2.5m richer after matching five numbers and one lucky star.

However, there was no winner of the massive €190m jackpot, with the lucky player in Ireland falling just one number short of winning what would have been among the biggest ever lottery jackpot prizes in European history.

They were one of eight buyers across Europe to win what the National Lottery has called "a huge amount of money".

The winning numbers were 6, 9, 35, 41, 44 and lucky stars 6 and 9.

More than 130,000 players across Ireland won prizes.

The EuroMillions jackpot, capped at €190m, has been won three times in the past 15 years.

The current jackpot has been rolling over since mid-July. If there is no winner of next Tuesday's draw, that means the full value of the jackpot will flow down to the next tier.

This leaves open the possibility of multiple millionaires across Europe.

A spokesperson for the National Lottery is urging the winning ticket holder to keep their slip safe and to get in contact to arrange collecting their prize.

The spokesperson said: "Irish EuroMillions players seem to be getting closer and closer to hitting the jackpot.

"There was no winner of the capped €190m jackpot on offer which means, for the first time in the history of the game, we have a ‘must be won’ event next Tuesday which means that if there is no winner of the jackpot prize, the entire jackpot will be shared at the next prize tier at which there are winners.

Hopefully our players in Ireland can go one better this Tuesday to have our 15th EuroMillions jackpot winner.

The record EuroMillions jackpot win was by the Naul Family Syndicate from North County Dublin last February who collected a cheque for €175m.

A couple from Northern Ireland also won €130m on New Year's Day this year.

14 Irish people have won the EuroMillions jackpot since its inception in 2004.
