Wizz Air has hit out at 'provocative and inaccurate' comments made by Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary on Newstalk Breakfast last week.

The budget airline launched an unlimited flight subscription service last week which would give customers access to unlimited Wizz Air flights for €499 per year.

On Friday Michael O'Leary said he wasn't impressed by the move which he branded "a bit of a marketing scam".

"You can fly as often as you like but you pay €9 every time you book a flight and you can only book the flight three days before departure," he said.

"Most of the flight will be full, there'll be no seat availability.

"It's an interesting marketing stunt but that's all it is".

Speaking this morning, Wizz Air Chief Corporate and ESG Officer Yvonne Moynihan dismissed his criticism.

"The comments of Mr O'Leary were not only provocative but they were also inaccurate," she said.

"We have been overwhelmed by the extremely positive response to the new all-you-can-fly membership.

"It gives thousands of travellers hundreds of options for a one-time fixed price for one year.

"There are no blackout periods or restricted destinations".

Ms Moynihan said there is a small booking fee per flight.

"There's no specific percentage of seats so there's no catch," she said.

"There are clear to terms and conditions, one of which is that members can book their flight within 72 hours - so three days - [before] the departure of the flight.

"There's a small flat booking fee of €9.99 per flight."

Ms Moynihan said their flights usually have a load factor of between 90% to 95% with an average price 'between €70 and €100'.

"Currently [the subscription service is] sold out and we haven't released the figures yet," she said.

"In terms of the decision of looking at another campaign that's currently under consideration".

The Budapest-based carrier does not currently fly from Ireland and Ms Moynihan warned that the country "would not be an attractive market now because of the passenger cap at Dublin Airport".
