A woman has died in hospital several days after she was assaulted at a home in  Ballinasloe, County Galway. 

On Monday evening, Gardaí were called out to a property in the town where they found a woman in her 50s with serious injuries. 

She was taken to Portiuncula University Hospital for treatment but passed away on Thursday evening. 

The local coroner has been alerted and a post-mortem examination is due to take place. 

A man, who is also in his 50s, was charged and appeared before Ballinasloe District Court on Thursday.
