A woman has died after a two car collision on the old Galway road near Athlone.

The victim (49) was fatally injured when her vehicle struck another at around 9am at Cornafulla.

She was the car's only occupant. The male driver of the second vehicle has been taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe with non-life threatening injuries.

Gardaí are at the scene.

The road has been closed and diversions are in place.
