A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 27-year-old woman at an apartment in Midleton in Cork.
Emergency services discovered the woman at around 4pm this evening.
Gardaí and paramedics responded to reports of a severely injured woman at a second floor apartment at the junction of Main Street and Connolly Street in the town.
They also discovered the apartment was on fire and alerted the nearby Midleton Fire Service.
The woman was found with serious injuries and received emergency medical treatment but was pronounced dead a short time later.
A man in his 30s has been arrested and is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He is being detained at a Garda station in the south of the country.
The scene has been preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau and the local Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified.
An incident room has been set up at Midleton Garda station and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.
A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the family.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
They are also appealing to those with camera footage, including dashcam recordings from motorists in the area this afternoon, to make this available to Gardaí.
The town's main street has been sealed off and diversions are in place.
