The body of a woman in her 40s has been discovered at a residence on O'Brien Street in Waterford City.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident at about 10am this morning.

The woman was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead a short time later.

A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently held at a Garda station in the Eastern region of the country.

The body of the deceased remains at the scene, which is currently being preserved for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them, particularly those who may have camera footage.
