A woman has been hospitalised after a serious assault in Ballinasloe, County Galway. 

At 7pm on Monday evening, Gardaí were called out to property in the town where they found the woman. 

She was then taken to Portiuncula University Hospital where her condition remains critical. 

A man in his 50s has been arrested and is currently detained at a Galway Garda station. 

Gardaí said their investigations are ongoing.
