A woman has died after she was hit by a car while out walking in County Clare.

Gardaí said it happened on the main Ennis to Kilrush Road near Darragh shortly after 7pm last night.

The 41-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to University Hospital Limerick.

She was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Gardaí said the driver of the car, a man in his 40s, was unharmed.

The road has been closed ahead of a forensic examination of the crash site this morning. Local diversions are in place
