A 19-year-old woman who pushed her friend off a 50ft bridge as she was preparing to jump has been jailed for two days in the US.

16-year-old Jordan Holgerson broke her ribs and suffered a punctured lung after hitting the water at Moulton Falls in Washington State on August 7th 2018.

She had been preparing to make the leap at the popular swimming area when her friend Tay'Lor Smith stepped in and shoved her off.

A video of the incident went viral after it was posted on YouTube.

Ms Holgerson has said she has suffered with anxiety and panic attacks in the months since – and had called for Smith to spend time behind bars.

In an interview with good Morning America last year, Smith insisted that she never meant to hurt her.

"She wanted to jump and she was scared and she asked me to give her a push,” she said.

"I didn't think about the consequences; I thought she would be fine."

Apology

She said it was “a little shocking” that Ms Holgerson wanted her to serve jail time but added, “she is probably going through a lot of confusion.”

She said she has apologised several times in the months since but has not seen her in person.

She said Ms Holgerson initially accepted that she had not meant to hurt her; however, after a time she cut off all contact.

“I never intended to hurt her,” she said.

“I am really sorry it turned out that way. I just pray that she heals and gets better.”

At Clark County Courthouse in Vancouver, Washington yesterday, Smith was also sentenced to 38 days labour on a county work crew - or community service - for misdemeanour reckless endangerment.
