The body of 8-year-old Anthony Ward was found at his home in Charleville on Monday.
The woman was arrested yesterday evening and brought to Mallow Garda Station for questioning.
She is being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows for her detention for up to 24 hours before she is either released or charged.
8-year-old Anthony had been due to return to school on Monday.
