XL bully dogs are set to be banned in Ireland.
Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys is set to announce plans today to outlaw the breeding, importing, selling or rehoming of the breed from October this year.
Current owners of XL bully dogs will be subject to strict new rules from next February.
Special certificates will be needed to ensure the dogs are neutered and microchipped.
XL bullies are already among 11 breeds of dogs on a 'restricted breeds' list in Ireland, but there are currently no bans in place.
The restrictions mean that while in public these dogs need to be muzzled, must be on a short leash of less than two meters and can only be led by people over the age of 16.
They also have to wear a collar at all times with the owners information on it - including a name and address.
The restrictions also apply to a mix with one of the breeds on the list.
It follows a recent spate in dog attacks, including the death of Nicole Morey in Limerick last month.
The 23-year-old died following the attack at a house on her birthday in the village of Fedamore in Ballyneety.
Ms Morey's death reignited the debate around a dog ban, with some people suggesting owners should be trained before they can own certain breeds.
An interdepartmental working group was set up after Alejandro Miszan (9) was left with life-altering injuries when he was attacked by an XL bully dog in November 2022.
