38 per cent of 18-24 year olds drinking at home checked the strength of their drink, compared with 27 per cent of 25-64s.
However researchers say this may be because young people are likely to want stronger drinks so they get drunk quicker.
Overall, the number of people drinking at home fell from 75 per cent to 71 per cent between 2009 and 2011.
And the frequency of drinking at home also dropped, with those drinking up to three times a week falling from 46 per cent in 2006 to 41 per cent in 2011.
Shrinking household budgets and rising prices were the main resons why people are drinking less at home.
