A young woman has died in a car crash in County Laois.

Gardaí said the woman, aged in her mid-20s, died in the crash involving two cars on Lea Road in Portarlington at around 8:20am this morning.

Her body has been taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out.

Two adults and two children travelling in the other car have been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A father and one child were taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital while a mother and another child were taken to Tallaght Hospital.

The road is currently closed while Gardaí carry out a forensic investigation.

Local diversions are in place.

Investigators are calling for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dash-cam footage, to contact them.
