Sunday Business Post to seek appointment of interim examiner in the High Court today 

Workers of parent company told yesterday group was in receivership.

The Irish Examiner and all its other titles and radio stations were sold to the new company - Landmark Media Investments - formed by the Crosbie family who owned the previous firm.

If an examiner is appointed to the Sunday Business Post today, then the 76 workers employed there will be kept on and the paper will continue to be published during the examinership.

Newstalk's Business Editor Ian Guider says it's not clear yet if Landmark Media will buy the paper.

 

Ulster Bank says services are running as normal following major technical problems last night

Ulster Bank says all of its services are now running as normal following major technical problems last night.

Customers at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Ulster Bank and Natwest in Ireland and the UK reported that they could not withdraw money from cash machines, pay for items with their cards or access online banking.

The bank has apologised for the technical problems across its network. It is the second time in 9 months that customers have been hit. The group had similar problems in June.

No reasons were given for the latest problems as customers took to social networking sites to complain about the problems.

Helpline numbers were given for any customers still having issues with their accounts.

 

Gardai continue to question five men in connection with fatal shooting in Co Meath yesterday

Peter Butterly of Dunleer in Co Louth was shot dead in a car outside the Huntsman Inn near Gormanstown.

The father of three was known to Gardai and had links to dissident republicans.

Security Editor with the Irish Independent Tom Brady says the shooting was the result of an escalation of a Real IRA feud.

 

Facebook and Twitter before Oireachtas Committee over cyber-bullying

The ocial media giants are to outline how they are dealing with issues.

Representatives from Facebook and Twitter will appear before an Oireachtas Committee today.

They have been invited along to outline how they protect users from cyber-bullying and their online responsibility as a whole.

The committee members have been discussing the rise of social media including the dangers of bullying and online harassment.

It is part of a series of hearings being heard before the Oireachtas Communications Committee on the use of social media.

Senator Eamon Coghlan proposed that asking people for their passport numbers or getting them to "pay to post" on social media could help tackle the issue of anonymity

 

Details have emerged about the Ministerial trips abroad for St Patrick's Day

The Government was previously reluctant to send too many Minister's abroad for Paddy's Day celebrations but they are now taking advantage of the opportunity:

  • The first of them, the Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe, will set off today for Australia.
  • The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar will travel to Japan later in the month
  • The Childrens Minister Frances Fitzgerald is going to India
  • The Environment Minister Phil Hogan will travel to Boston
  • The Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton will travel to Chicago
  • The Communications and Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte will go to New York
  • The Tanaiste travels to Washington
  • And the Taoiseach Enda Kenny will make his way to Washington for the annual visit to the White House, along with trips to New York, Seattle and Silicone Valley.
  • The Justice Minister Alan Shatter will travel to the Middle East next week - although that trip is not strictly for St Patrick's Day.
