The daughter of a woman who died due to medical misadventure is urging families to trust their instincts when their loved ones are in hospital.

52-year-old Susan McGee died 11 days after she underwent minor elective surgery to treat a hernia at The Hermitage Clinic in Dublin.

Multi-organ failure was the cause of death.

Yesterday at Mrs McGee’s inquest, the coroner recorded a verdict of death by medical misadventure.

Susan's daughter Melissa Barry says people have a perception that they will receive better care in private hospitals - but she says families must still be vigilant.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Melissa said she hopes "to try and prevent another family from going through the pure heartbreak and devastation we've been through.

"We may never meet these people, we may never know these people, but my one word of advice to anybody out there that has loved ones in hospital is to absolutely trust your instincts," she added.

Melissa hopes that new procedures will be put in place to prevent any repeat or similar cases. "I believe The Hermitage have implemented improved procedures... whereby the covering consultant must now visit the patient within an allocated time - which didn't take place with Mam," she told Chris.
