Apple boss Tim Cook is preparing for the first major product launch for the company since he took over at the helm of the tech giant.

Its the long awaited watch, which was previewed last September, will be officially launched later.

Reports suggest Apple may sell as many as one million per month from the summer onwards.

The watch can also be used to pay for good through Apple Pay.

Though some developers have already showcased apps for the watch, the event should shed further light on potential third-party uses.

The tech giant has been keen for people to see the watch as a piece of jewellery, not just technology.

Much of their marketing has focused around the watch straps, which will be available in a wide variety of designs.

The watch face can have a multitude of different looks - analogue and digital - with several different styles.

While a swipe shows you your planner for the day, and even a map to your next destination. It is also connected to your calendar, contacts, and your schedule.

Apple says when you press two fingers on the screen, the built-in heart rate sensor records and sends your heartbeat.

And you will also be able to use your finger to draw something on the screen.

A user on the other end can watch your drawing animate, then respond with one for you.

It is Apple's first new platform, since unveiling the iPad during the late Steve Jobs' reign in 2010.

Newstalk.com's business editor Vincent Wall told Breakfast there is a lot of excitement surrounding the launch.
