Residents of the Aran Islands are calling for a withdrawal of a helicopter service contract announced by the government last week.

After over 45 years of service, Aer Arann Islands flights between Galway and the Aran Islands are to end, with Executive Helicopters in Galway set to take on air service responsibilities to the islands.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht, Joe McHugh.

Campaigners say winter is a critical time when they are "extremely dependent" on the Aer Arann service.

At the moment, there are two scheduled flight in the morning and one in the afternoon to Inis Meáin.

Tarlach de Blacam has been campaigning to keep airplane services operating between the island and the mainland.

He told Newstalk Breakfast the air service is crucial for daily life and business.
