The number of burglaries recorded in the greater Dublin area jumped again last week, the sixth week in a row.
The problem isn't just confined to Dublin; theft is a nationwide issue particularly over the holidays, as burglars spot empty houses over the break.
Sgt Dean Kerins, Crime Prevention Officer from Meath, spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning, and stated that traditionally burglaries will increase this time of the year.
"The most popular times when burglaries will occur will be between 5pm and 11pm. What we're telling people if they're planning to go away on festive holidays is to beware of what information you put out on social media."
"If you have a house alarm, make sure it's working. Give the impression that there is someone living in the house all during the Christmas period. Make sure your lights are working around the house.
"Secure all your doors and windows and even use the alarm when you're in the house yourself."
Sgt Kerins also said the items that burglars go for are mainly jewellery and cash. "They're the two items that it's easiest for them to make use of."
"We're trying to advise people to not keep large volumes of cash in their house."
