A new report is raising awareness of the financial cost of being diagnosed with cancer.

The research commissioned by the Irish Cancer Society puts the average amount at €862 a month.

That is according to the report, launched today by the Irish Cancer Society, titled 'The Real Cost of Cancer'.

It takes account of the money paid out to cover the cost of medicine and doctors' charges, as well as daily bills like childcare and hospital parking.

Kathleen O'Meara from the ICS says its a side of the diagnosis that a lot of people do not realise.

"Cancer patients will tell you that when they're diagnosed their single focus is to get better, is to get through the treatment and get out the other side of it" she told Newstalk Breakfast.

"And they don't think about the financial cost".

"But one woman told us - and she's not exceptional - that in fact the financial stress of the cancer treatment and going through cancer was as big as being diagnosed with cancer" she added.
