The Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan has confirmed files exist on suspected jihadis in this country.

Mr Flanagan was speaking a day after attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers, where recent terror developments - including the deadly attack in Tunisia - were discussed.

It comes as the Turkish government has promised to increase security on the country's border with Syria, after 30 people were killed and over 100 wounded in a bombing yesterday in the town of Suruc.

Mr Flanagan says he keeps in close contact with the Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald on the topic.

"Ireland is very low in terms of threat...but we obviously need to remain on alert and vigilant", Mr Flanagan told Newstalk Breakfast

When asked if there are files on jihadi fighters in Ireland, Mr Flanagan replied "Oh there are".

"We have strengthened our own legislation here before Christmas to introduce new terror charges".

"I believe the important thing is that we remain in close contact with communities in order to prevent what we call radicalisation".

He also told Newstalk Breakfast that the Radicalisation Awareness Network - part of the European Commission - and the sharing of airline passenger data is an important part of the process.
