100 minors were diagnosed with "acute alcohol intoxication" in Temple Street Children's Hospital over the last three years, six of them were aged 12 or under.

Acute alcohol intoxication, also known as alcohol poisoning, is a potentially fatal condition that can lead to convulsions and coma.

According to the Sunday Times, a total of 114 children under the age of 17 presented to the hospital with dangerously high alcohol intake between 2012 and 2014. Almost three-quarters of these were girls.

The children are admitted overnight for a full check-up and psychiatric services are alerted if this is considered an attempt to self-harm.

Consultant Paediatrician at Temple Street Children's Hospital, Dr. Alf Nicholson, spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning about the report and he highlighted some of the concerns that it raised.
