The Children's Ombudsman is calling for a dedicated Oireachtas committee to be set up for her area.
Emily Logan says she would report to it, and it would also set the budget for her office - which is marking ten years in operation today.
She currently reports directly to the Oireachtas rather than any one particular minister, however her funding comes through the Department of Children.
Emily Logan told Newstalk's Breakfast a dedicated committee could remedy that situation:
The Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child will address a symposium on Children, Family and the State in Dublin later.
The event has been organised to mark the anniversary of the Ombudsman's office. The Ombudsman and the Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald will also attend.
