The family of a Cork teenager who was left paralysed after she fell off the roof of a nightclub are worried her recovery will suffer due to a lack of specialised facilities in Cork.

Ciara O'Brien spent two and a half weeks at the National Spinal Injuries Unit at the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

But on Tuesday she was moved to Cork University Hospital.

Maria O'Mahoney is Ciara's aunt and she spoke to Newstalk Breakfast.

"On Tuesday evening, the situation for her was very bleak", she said.

"There was an elderly lady next to her who was post-op - the poor lady should have been on her own in her own right - it was a mixed ward as well, with three guys and three ladies, including Ciara".

"At that point she was advised they didn't have the facilities there and she was advised they didn't have shower facilities and they didn't have a chair".

"The information regarding what she needed wasn't there...it was kind of a group of things that happened at one time".

But Ms O'Mahoney adds: "The nursing staff couldn't be better or kinder - it's not their fault".

"The system had failed her, especially on Tuesday - the system failed her terribly".
