Over the last number of months Breakfast has been looking into one of the less publicised yet deadly legacies of the Celtic tiger – the family homes built in breach of building regulations.

One development which reporter Kieran Cuddihy has visited on numerous occasions is Riverwalk Court in Ratoath, Co Meath. The development has been beset by serious structural and safety problems, and a new report has found that the homes are below the required fire safety standards - including problems with wiring, electrical sockets and the thickness of plaster boards.

Meath County Council has responded by saying the report identifies issues that must be addressed, but they are not responsible for the renovation of the properties, and they will condemn the development if it is not brought up to the required safety standards.

The council has asked the developers and management company to submit their proposals but has ultimately said that they are not responsible for the repairs.

The buildings will be condemned if they are not fixed – in which case the owners would still be liable for their mortgages, as was the case with residents of the Priory Hall development in Dublin, which had to be evacuated and condemned over safety concerns.
