The Health Minister says the government accepts in full the findings of the interim report of the Fennelly Commission.

The report published yesterday evening found Taoiseach Enda Kenny did not force Martin Callinan to quit as Garda Commissioner, although it did find that the decision to send the Secretary General of the Department of Justice to the home of the Garda Commissioner, was the “immediate catalyst” for Mr Callinan’s decision.

Leo Varadkar says Justice Niall Fennelly is the only person who spoke to every person involved in the controversy, his findings are very clear and he “debunked” the opposition's central charge that the Taoiseach sought to sack the Garda Commissioner.

Many of this morning’s papers carry speculation about the future of the Taoiseach, but Mr Varadkar says that those looking to find fault beyond the findings of the report are “expressing a personal opinion”.

“People can have whatever opinions they like about this issue and this controversy ... the Taoiseach and I and the government accept those findings,” he said.

“Anyone who goes beyond those findings is expressing a personal opinion or surmising for other reasons,” he added.

When pressed to ask if the Taoiseach’s claims he was “exonerated” by the report were justified, Mr Varadkar asked Ivan Yates:

“Did you read a single critical finding against the Taoiseach in those 300 pages?”
