'Chuggers' are now banned from 100 towns in England.

Croydon in south London has become the latest area to curtail street fundraising.

It once again turns attention to charity collectors here in Ireland, with a Dublin councillor making a renewed call for regulation.

Currently this type of fundraising is left up to the charities themselves to regulate, although there is legislation pending as part of the Charities Act 2009.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Dublin City Councillor Mannix Flynn says he wants tougher regulations in our capital, saying he has 'substantial footage' of collectors using aggressive tactics on the streets.

Anne Hannify, CEO of Fundraising Ireland, also spoke to the show on the subject, and stressed the importance of street collection for charities around the country.

She pointed out that "the money that is raised every year is around €30 million, which is absolutely enormous for the charity sector... If we do anything to take away this method of fundraising, we are really taking away a massive contribution that is made to Irish society".

Councillor Flynn emphasised there is no intention to take away this method of fundraising, but added "what people are totally annoyed about is the manner in which these people go about their business".
