A Dublin maternity hospital last night secured a High Court order permitting it to withdraw life support from a day-old baby boy with severe brain damage.
At a late night sitting, the court heard the mother underwent an emergency caesarean section on Tuesday.
The young woman, who was 39 weeks pregnant, went into cardiac arrest and died on Tuesday night following a transfer to another hospital.
Her son was born severely brain damaged and was placed on life support - doctors believe his chances of survival are slim.
Because the mother was the boy’s sole legal guardian the hospital was required to seek a court order to withdraw his life support.
High Court President Nicholas Kearns agreed to make that order.
