One of the country's top experts on emergency medicine is warning that the drugs at the heart of the scuzz scare can cause mental illness.

Gardaí say they are seriously concerned and are continuing their investigation into the supply of the cocktail of drugs, which includes LSD and amphetamines.

It's caused up to seven people - including UCD students - to be hospitalised over the past week.

Chris Luke is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Cork University Hospital.

He told Newstalk's Breakfast the combination of drugs in scuzz is a volatile mix:

While many of those affected were students at UCD, there's no evidence that the drug is restricted to one university or one area.

Gardaí appealed for information about the incident when news of a seizure in Blackrock emerged yesterday, and UCD Students Union issued a warning to its members.
