The Oireachtas banking inquiry officially gets underway this morning.

The 11 members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee established to look at Ireland's banking crisis will hold a private meeting at Leinster House to begin working on the terms of reference for the inquiry.

There has been concern that the committee may be hampered by the row over its panel of members, and government moves to guarantee a majority.

Fianna Fáil's Michael McGrath is one of the 11 members, he hopes the committee can put the recent rows behind it:

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty says it is up him, and his fellow committee members, to restore public confidence in the banking inquiry.

He believes the first test of that will be whether they can agree terms of reference without another row breaking out along party lines.

He told Newstalk's Breakfast he expects there will be a number of official procedures to go through in the coming weeks, and the first witnesses probably won't appear before early 2015:
