Seagulls are on the agenda again - and people aren't happy

This morning Newstalk Breakfast went out to ask people of their interactions with the birds - and there was no shortage of tales of unwanted dealings with the birds. You can listen to that here.

Vanessa Keegan, from Clonsilla in Dublin, told us about her recent run in with a seagull – who stole her phone.

She told Chris about how a trip to the Botanic gardens with her daughter and grandchild was ruined when a seagull made away with her phone. Vanessa had been taking photos of her grandson at the time and even got the above picture of the offending bird.

The seagull made off with the phone pinched in his beak, before dropping it in a nearby pond. Two gardeners working nearby attempted to retrieve the phone but came up empty handed.

“I just stood there crying, and then I started laughing,” Vanessa said.

Theft by seagull isn’t your typical explanation when going to the insurance company, and Vanessa tried to discreetly go to her local Garda station to get the relevant reports stamped so she could make the claim.

“I had to write out a report of how it was stolen, so I went indiscreetly to the police station,” Vanessa told Chris.

“He just started to read how the phone was stolen and when he got to the seagull part I could see him laughing to himself ... and when he came back out he kind of said ‘a seagull took your phone’? I thought out of the police station I’d never get.”
