Earlier this month, a new opinion poll brought mixed news for the coalition. The RED C survey in the Sunday Business Post saw Fine Gael unchanged on 24% while Labour Party dropped two points in popularity to 7%.

The poll showed that more than a quarter who voted Fine Gael in 2011 and almost one-fifth of those who voted Labour now support Independents, while almost one-fifth of those who voted Fine Gael have now switched to Sinn Féin.

This morning, following the national conferences for the two parties which took place over the last two weeks, Chris and Ivan discussed what the next general election would mean for the country.

Ivan stated that the issue will be "is the election winnable for Fine Gael and Labour together? I don't believe so. I think that for Labour, the tide is gone out.

"My fear is that we're going to have this inertia of paralysis where every hot potato... they say, we'll just get this passed the next election. It creates a problem.

"We've now had the Labour and Fine Gael conferences and basically what they said is, what great people we are!

"Sorry, eaten bread is soon forgotten politics. It's what you're going to do next. You don't get a thank you vote.

"What Fine Gael in particular has got to do is, this is our vision of the future."
