An Irish student is due in court in Egypt on Sunday charged with number of offences - including terrorism, murder and use of explosives.

Ibrahim Halawa has been imprisoned since his arrest in August 2013, during protests in Cairo against the toppling of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.

Mr Halawa (19), from Firhouse in Dublin, has had his trial repeatedly adjourned.

Members of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee are set to visit Mr Halawa in Cairo, after an invitation from Egyptian authorities.

However, no date has yet been set.

The Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan has previously said that a formal request for his release has been made to authorities in Egypt.

"We are planning for him to come straight away to home". his sister Nusayba Halawa told Newstalk Breakfast.

"We just finished recently (the holiday of) Eid...and I was telling my family that we have been nearly two years we never gathered together".

"There's someone missing - either my mom, my sister, myself - someone has to be with Ibrahim, so we never gathered since that time".

Nusayba told Newstalk Breakfast their hopes are high for his court appearance this weekend.
