This morning’s front pages are a mix of dollars raining on FIFA president Sepp Blatter, courtesy foa British comedian staging a stunt at a FIFA press conference, and Irish amateur golfer Paul Dunne, who suffered a disappointing final round at the Open yesterday.

The main headline in the Irish Independent is: “Nursing home residents' assets to be scrutinised”.

The Irish Times leads with “Warning that extra spending in conflict with tax cuts”.

The Irish Examiner also leads with news on the Fair Deal, with the headline: “Stricter checks for Fair Deal users”.

Inside the papers, Chris picked out a story about a young woman in France who has had the HIV virus since birth, but the disease has now gone into remissions, following aggressive treatment since the woman’s birth. It is a potentially major medical development.

One story in the Irish Independent caught Ivan’s eye was the news that rating agency Fitch have said that if banks were to reduce standard variable mortgage rates it would benefit both banks and borrowers, by making it easier for borrowers to repay and more likely that banks will recoup their money.

A story in the Daily Mail tells us that €90,000 was spent on two carpets for the Dublin Lord Mayor’s residence, fitted in drawing room and dining room of the Mansion House.

Ivan, mistakenly believing these were the rooms where Newstalk’s Pat Kenny has hosted his UTV show ‘In the Round’, suggested a ready-made excuse for any Councillor asked about the expense.

“If I was a councillor I’d blame it on Pat Kenny,” he said.
