A train commuter who traveled on an expired ticket for eight months has been fined €5,544.

The Irish Independent reports the man had paid for an annual ticket from Drogheda to Balbriggan - but continued travelling to Blackrock DART station for several months without paying the extra fare.

He was caught when inspectors checked his ticket at Blackrock as part of a crackdown on fare dodgers.

An on-the-spot penalty fare of €100 was issued - but the smart card data showed the ticket was used at that station for up to eight months.

The man paid €1,160 for his annual pass, while the correct fare from Drogheda to Blackrock is €3,040.

Irish Rail say they could have applied a €100 penalty per journey - but instead they applied the single fare for each instance of travel.

It was part of Chris and Ivan's paper review on Newstalk Breakfast earlier.
