Irish Water will tomorrow start reading meters in advance of their first mail out of bills.

The utility confirmed last week it is expecting a large number of queries about the bills because of gaps and errors in the information they have on some properties.

Some 750 staff will be in place in call centres to handle the queries.

They include people being mistakenly billed, some meters that cannot be read because of technical issues, and problems with details like the number of people living in a house.

Meanwhile it is reported today that the names of more than 100,000 council tenants have been passed on to Irish Water by local authorities.

The company consulted the Data Protection Commissioner before requesting the information from councils.

Fianna Fail wants Irish Water to destroy the information its received so far on council tenants from local authorities.

Deputy Sean Fleming commented, "A number of local authorities have written to councillors in recent days to advise that tenant information has been handed over to Irish Water."

"The information is being handed over without the consent of tenants and little to no consultation is taking place with the locally elected councillors."

The party's spokesman on public expenditure told Newstalk Breakfast he is preparing legislation on the issue, which would require Irish Water to row back.
