Children as young as 11 need to be learning the difference between rape and sexual consent.
That is according to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC), which has said it is 'absolutely essential' something is done.
They also say children should discuss pornography with their teachers, as far too many are relying on it to form their sex education.
Its head of education says some young people are being coerced by their peers and by outside messages into certain kinds of behaviour, and are very confused.
Head of education with the DRCC, Leonie O'Dowd, says some children might be protected from this kind of material - but they will still need help when they do encounter it.
She told Newstalk Breakfast the earlier children are educated, the better they will be able to cope.
