An investigation is underway into the cause of yesterday evening's crash in Co Kerry, in which 11 children and four adults were injured.

Fifteen people were injured in a collision in Co Kerry yesterday. Four adults and 11 children were hurt when a mini bus and a saloon car collided just after 5:30pm.

The crash happened two miles from the village of Farranfore on the Killarney side of the N22.

Some 10 ambulances attended the scene, as well as two rapid response vehicles, an intermediate care vehicle and two doctors.

Four helicopters were also sent to remove casualties from the scene; two from the Irish Coastguard Service and two from the Irish Air Corps.

Six people were airlifted to Cork University Hospital for treatment, and nine others were taken to Kerry General Hospital with what are thought to be less serious injuries.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) says that, as is normal practice in large scale accidents, Kerry General Hospital has activated its emergency response plan to enable it to provide a full response to the emergency.

Cathal O'Donnell is medical director for the National Ambulance Service.

He told Newstalk Breakfast that they were fortunate that this happened near an airport.
