A significant bill is to go before Cabinet later this week, which will allow 50,000 adopted people to access their birth certificates for the first time.

The Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill is aimed at striking a balance between birth parents' right to privacy and the rights of the adopted person.

Anne Ferris, Labour TD for Wicklow, told Chris Donoghue on Newstalk Breakfast this morning she is “absolutely delighted” and “shaking with relief” that the legislation will now go before Cabinet.

Ms Ferris was adopted and had a baby given up for adoption as a teenager.

The bill goes before Cabinet one year after she spoke in the Dáil about her own experience with adoption – which led to James Reilly pushing to bring the bill before Cabinet.
