A memorial plaque and a stool are just some of the items that have been stolen from HPV vaccine campaigner Laura Brennan's grave, according to her family.

The 26-year-old passed away in March 2019.

Laura became a household name after she contracted terminal cervical cancer in September 2017, and began publicly advocating for more people to get the HPV vaccine.

Laura’s father Larry Brennan says a number of items have disappeared from her grave, but the family is only raising the issue as other mourning families have also been impacted.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, he explained: "Soon after we buried her, within the first month, there were particular things that disappeared.

"The thing that upset us the most was the memorial plaque - a print of her memorial card which was enlarged and placed at the front of the grave. It was a special gift.

"We had a stool taken, believe it or not. We used to go up and sit beside the grave on a little stool. Bouquets of flowers are common enough: her friends had left bouquets of flowers for her birthday and anniversary. And digging up plants took place in the first year as well.

"The first thing we do when we arrive in the grave at the morning is look at the grave and see if there's something missing... which is a sad way to visit any graveyard."

He stressed the family doesn't believe Laura's grave is being targeted specifically.

Instead, they are speaking up about it as they want to raise awareness of the situation facing other families both at the Drumcliffe Cemetery in Ennis and elsewhere around the country.

Mr Brennan said they decided to speak publicly when the general situation in the graveyard was being considered by Clare County Council.

He explained: "We were asked to come in and say a few words about it.

"We have experienced grief with other people up there as well. A husband who has lost a wife, a wife who has lost a husband, other kids up there who have been buried. Parents and families have lost stuff unnecessarily."

He said he believes items like the stolen plaque - which has now been replaced at the grave itself - could end up somewhere like a car-boot sale.

However, he urged those responsible for taking it to think of the grief families impacted are feeling.
