This week on Breakfast, our resident film reviewer John Kelleher joined Chris and Ivan to look at new releases Gravity and The Butler.
In Gravity Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) find themselves in the middle of a disaster on a routine mission in space. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone & Kowalski completely alone- tethered to nothing but each other and spiralling out in space. The silence is deafening as their oxygen supply slowly ebbs away.
Cecil Gaines was a sharecropper’s son who grew up in the 1920’s as a domestic servant for the white family in The Butler. He eventually struck out on his own to become a hotel valet in the 1950’s. his efficiency and discretion leads him to be appointed butler in the White House. There, Cecil would serve numerous US Presidents over the decades as a passive witness of history. While the American Civil Rights Movement gains momentum, his family deals with troubles of their own. His wife Gloria struggles with her addictions and his defiant eldest son strives for a just world. Cecil ultimately must decide whether he should take action in his own way.
John's classic movie this week is Harold Becker's Sea of Love. Hardened detective Frank Keller, played by Al Pacino, is on the verge of retirement, though without his wife who has left him for another man. Investigating the link between lonely hearts columns and a spate of murders in the city, Frank becomes involved in a relationship with one of his main suspects.
