Two of Irish people who were in Nepal during the earthquake last month have spoken of the devastation in the region.

Around 100 Irish people were caught up in the worst the worst earthquake to hit the region in 80 years, which killed more than 7,000.

Among them was a group of eight Wexford hill-walkers, who are organising a fundraiser to help in the aid effort.

One of them, Catherine Jordan, told Newstalk Breakfast that the damage is overwhelming.

Meanwhile, 63 tonnes of Irish Aid have arrived in the country.

The delivery which arrived last night contains essential items including thousands of blankets, tents and water.

Rescue teams from more than 20 countries have been using sniffer dogs and thermal-imaging equipment to find survivors, but outside the capital the search is largely being carried out by police officers and the military.

Concerns have increased over the speed that aid is getting to people affected by the quake, with people complaining about a lack of temporary shelters as many sleep outside because of the fear of aftershocks causing more buildings to collapse.
