It’s been a long week on the airwaves at Newstalk with some very sad stories on various programmes.

Derek Davis

First off, we lost one of the great broadcasters this week. Derek Davis passed away after a short illness. George Hook paid tribute to him on his show on Wednesday evening by playing out an old interview where Derek spoke about his love for reading and books.

Portlaoise Hospital

One of the most heartbreaking interviews from this week was the mother of a baby who died at Cavan General Hospital last year. With the news that an investigation had been launched into the death of a baby in the hospital earlier this week, she spoke about the heartbreak of that kind of loss to Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime. This interview really broke my heart:

The Shelbourne

During the parenting slot this week on Moncrieff, they discussed children not being able to go the toilet. Then Sean decided he would tell the world about his love for a toilet break in the Shelbourne

Henry McKean and Rita Doherty

On Moncrieff yesterday, Henry McKean spoke to Rita Doherty whose son Alan, who was gay, took his own life. She spoke about how devastating a no vote would be for her and during the interview mentioned that the last time she saw Alan. Here is a clip of her talking about the day Alan was found:

And last, but not least, people are kind.

On this show yesterday morning, Declan O’Donoghue managed to bag himself a grand after he answered a question right for Trust or Bust.  Just after he won the money, Declan told Ivan and Chris that he would love to pass it on to a previous guest, Gerard Gallagher, a wheelchair user who was trapped on a train when the station closed.

Just shows you that there are good people in the world!
