There are renewed calls for more to be done to keep children safe from sexual harm.

Support group One in Four say they provided counselling to 116 survivors and to 43 families last year.

It says that fewer than 15% of victims who contacted them decided to make a complaint to the gardaí.

"In the past, those who made a complaint generally met well- trained, experienced gardaí who could handle an investigation in a sensitive and professional manner", One in Four says.

"Increasingly, survivors are meeting young gardaí who do not have the training or experience to engage sensitively with our clients. This is a major concern".

The agency is releasing its annual report, and says it highlights an urgent need for more resources.

It also says that Ireland has "a long way to go before we become a society where lives are not blighted by child sexual abuse".

It adds that one in four Irish people experience sexual abuse, and that most children do not talk about it.

The group says that in 2014, they had to close their waiting list for four months as they could not afford to employ enough counsellors.

Maeve Lewis is executive director of One in Four.

She told Newstalk Breakfast while experienced gardaí are important, the criminal trial is "the really big problem".
