New research shows further evidence that people are better off having a job than living on the dole.
The ESRI has found that most people who claim benefits are single and childless, who would earn more on the minimum wage.
Even when work does pay less than welfare, seven out of 10 people would prefer to have a job.
Research professor with the ESRI Tim Callan told Newstalk's Breakfast there are some groups who could potentially be better off on welfare:
However, the ESRI does identify Rent Supplement as a disincentive to work - because it is not payable to those in full-time work.
It concludes that substantial reductions in unemployment require job creation - and the provision of training and upskilling to workers where new jobs arise.
